Since 2015, Shmalberg has served as chief nutrition officer at NomNomNow. Headquartered in the San Francisco Bay area, NomNomNow makes individualized pet meals with the freshest, restaurant-quality ingredients, and delivers them to customers’ doors. Each meal is cooked weekly in the company’s local kitchen, individually proportioned, tailored to meet the specific nutrition needs of each dog (based on weight, breed, and other factors), and ready to serve. Today, as NomNomNow delivers to dogs across the 48 contiguous U.S. states, the company is expanding access to the healthiest, highest-quality pet food, and giving pet owners the benefits of homemade meals without the time-consuming prep. In his role, Shmalberg develops and formulates each and every recipe, and helps create educational materials for NomNomNow’s customers.


Dishes for Dogs is a Miami-based dog food kitchen committed to bringing transparency to the dog food industry. Shmalberg serves as the company’s expert in canine nutrition, formulating complete and balanced fresh dog food recipes, including a condition-specific diet line designed to address certain ailments (like skin allergies and pancreatic issues) through nutrition.


Shmalberg cofounded this company with another leading veterinary nutritionist, Dr. Joe Wakshlag. Together they provide consulting and product development for other companies and brands. Veterinarian Recommended Solutions, a maker of therapeutic diets for pets with a focus on natural, high-quality ingredients, and Annamaet Pet Foods, one of the first companies to produce a high-protein, grain-free kibble, are two of their clients. They also manufacture a supplement specifically for clients who are preparing homemade meals for their pets.
